Rocking Autum Excerpt | 99 Cent Sale |NEW Project!

Eight days in a row.

Eight days in a row, Jaxon has come in and bought a cupcake.

The first seven days I hid.

I could see him at the crosswalk on the corner of Main and Second from where I stood at the cash register. He didn’t look both ways. He didn’t even wait for the signal. He just crossed the street like he owned it, his stupid hair blowing back in the breeze.

Too afraid of what I might say, I hid behind tall rows of books so he couldn’t see me. Yesterday I hid in the kitchen and the day before I hid in the office. But I watched him the whole time. He would flash that bright white grin and order a coffee. Double espresso macchiato, like that made him so sophisticated or something.  He flirted, asking for cupcake recommendations.

God, the way he lay on the charm with Shannon, the barista. It made me sick. And her giggling at his jokes was even worse. I had to do something, this had to stop.

Following him out to the sidewalk, my knees shake so hard I’m afraid I’ll fall over. “Get back here,” I call to him.

Jax turns to the sound of my voice, with that maddening grin on his face. “I knew you’d come around.”

“No,” I shake my head in disgust. “I came out here to tell you to stop. Stop coming in. Stop with the flirting and the cupcakes and—just stop.”

“Why does it bother you so much?” Jax leans against the brick building, propping himself up with his elbow.

I wonder if maybe there is some kind of ‘cool’ class he went to and learned these things. The Perfect Smirk 101. Advanced Leaning Against Buildings Theory and Discussion. Philosophy of Always Looking Like Your Hair Is Blowing In The Breeze. Creative Eye Smoldering Basics.

“It-it doesn’t bother me,” I stutter and roll my eyes, vowing not to let myself get distracted in staring at him. “Fine, it does bother me. You’re bothering me. I’m trying to work, something you obviously know nothing about. I have responsibilities, okay? I can’t just run around with a stupid freaking guitar and get people to throw money at me. I have to work for it. And you’re…”

He smirks again. “I’m what? Distracting you?”

“Fuck off, Jaxon.” I shake my head.

“C’mon,” he urges. “Let’s get lunch and catch up.”

“I’m not hungry,” I say and cross my arms defiantly.

“You know you want to.” He moves closer and lowers his head so that our faces are mere inches away from each other. “You just said yourself that I’m a distraction.”

“Have you always been this full of yourself?” I snarl.

Jaxon chuckles and shrugs. Raking his fingers through his hair. He’s so close I can smell him. The crisp, clean scent of soap and the warm, masculine musk of his skin. I have the urge to reach out and slap him.

“You forget, I know you.” I grin right back. Two can play this game. “Or at least I used to. This Jaxon—” I use my hands to gesture towards him. “The one walking around like he owns this town, grinning at everyone and acting like he’s so cool and sexy? This isn’t the Jaxon I knew.”

“You think I’m sexy?” he asks with a grin.

“I feel sorry for you. I really do.” I take a step back to get away from his nearness. “The Jaxon I knew was sweet. Maybe a little cocky and rough around the edges, but not this—egomaniac asshole purposely trying to ruin my workday.”

His face softens slightly, but it isn’t good enough. “I’m not trying to ruin your work day Autumn. I’m trying to get you to talk to me.”

“Well, you’re doing a miserable job of it.” I turn and walk a few steps, resting my hand on the handle of the door. I turn back to face him for a  second. “My advice? Turn around and leave. Go back to Chicago and don’t come back.”

“What about my daily cupcakes? I’m starting to get used them.” He cocks his head to the side.

“I’m sure you’ll learn to live without them. The same way I learned to live without you.” With that, I open the door of the bookstore, walk in, and don’t look behind me to see his expression.

If you’ve made it this far then welcome to my WIP update and New Project announcement.

Broken is coming right along. I’ve finished the first 30K words and now I am waiting for NaNoWriMo to begin so I can write the remaining 50-60K. I’m SO excited about where this story is going.

For those who know me, I was involved in a storytelling forum of sorts for MANY years. And I had quite a few stories that were popular, but none were as popular as my ongoing story of Matt and Miley. It had glamour, lust, love, betrayal, heartbreak and so much more. I’ve decided to turn it into a series! I have not purchased these images yet, these are just for me to figure out visually where I am going. But here is a sneak peek at The Enigma Models INC series…

NaNoWriMo Update *FB Giveaway*

*Whew*

I’ve been trying to get to 30,000 words by the end of October so I can knock out the other 50,000 in November during NaNoWriMo. As of yesterday, I am at just over 16,000 – I did 3,000 just last night.

This one has been going a little slower for me. The plot is a little more complicated than most things I’ve written – and then on top of my complicated plot, I have all that romance arc to weave in. I do like plot-driven romances a lot more than I like the ones that just jump straight into the sexy stuff – and I was having a hard time finding some balance.

The outline I usually use for plotting can be found in the book The Plot Whisperer – and it works great! Then I discovered a book the other night called Romancing The Beat. It was exactly what I needed to keep the tension and romance high while also keeping my story moving forward. I’m super excited to see how it plays out.

If you haven’t seen on my Facebook page I have this super awesome gift up for grabs:

Meet Autumn – Character Interview

Depositphotos_11997568_orig

Name: Autumn Jane Brooks, or AJ as my friends call me

Place of birth: Hood River, Oregon

Parents: Steve and Cheryll Brooks

Siblings: I was an only child

Places lived: I lived in Hood River until I was eleven, then my family moved to Walla Walla. I took off at nineteen to live in LA, but I came back a couple of years later.

Favorite subject in school: Art. Always art!

Jobs: I run Brooks Books and Patisserie with the help of my bestie, Hadley

Do you like yourself: Yeah, I guess. I mean…sure. I like myself. I’m a nice person.

What, if anything, would you like to change in your life: Nothing really. I have a great job. Great friends and a cute little condo. Maybe a nicer car? The Subaru is kind of a soccer mom car.

How much self-control and self-discipline do you have: Usually a lot. Except when it comes to one person…

Best way to spend a weekend: Grabbing a cocktail with Hadley at PH 124, snuggling with Jasper my cat and binging on Netflix shows, doing some yoga and maybe going for a hike.

What do you carry in your pockets/purse/backpack, etc.?  Oh my gosh, what don’t I carry? Wallet, about six lipglosses, sunglasses, rosewater spray for my skin, lotion, tons of old receipts that need to be thrown out. It’s just a mess.

What emotion/feeling are you afraid to experience? Love….

Starting a Youtube Channel

pexels-photo-414548.jpeg

As a single mom of two, who has a full-time career and is an aspiring full-time Romance author – finding time to do it all is difficult. Sometimes it’s downright draining. The one thing I’ve loved since I decided to take this journey is the connections I’ve made along the way.

I’ve cherished the advice given to me, and I’ve tried to pass it along to other people I meet.

I’d like to take this process, this journey, to another level. A more personal one. I’d like to share this road I’m traveling with you – on video. I’d like to share my ups and downs, my daily life, some of my tips and tricks, how I manage my time and the things that I learn as I go. And I’ll do it all with my weird sense of humor and a smile!

I’ve started jotting down a few video ideas to get started with, I’ve found myself some official “vlogger” music and I will sit down and take the time to create a channel! I have every Monday off, my children are in school, so what better way to enjoy my quiet time, then chatting with you!

I look forward to sharing with everyone, and if there are specific videos you would like to see, I am always open to suggestion.

Until then,

Sometimes They Just Said

Someone asked me the other day: “What’s your favorite part about writing?”

The answer was simple. Easy.

Dialogue. I love creating believable, sincere dialogue. I love getting into my characters head and creating their “voice”. Their way of speaking. Their nuances and mannerisms.

I particularly love writing men’s voices. I love the challenge of it. Guys speak differently to each other than they would to a woman. They speak differently to a woman they are flirting with than they would with a woman they have been dating for a long period of time.

I love digging in there and finding that authentic voice to create a realistic dialogue between my characters.

giphy

After I write dialogue (heck, after I write anything, but mostly dialogue) my trick is to read it out loud as if I am having this conversation. (Do I need to remind you that writers are weird?)

I took a class not too long ago. A writer’s course. One of the subjects was, of course, creating dialogue. A much-heated debate arose surrounding a particular word.

Said.

I just said it. The “dirty” word of authors.

Said is boring. (They said) You can’t use said. (They said) Here is a list of 500 words to use instead of said. (They said)

I looked over that list, mortified. I went through my manuscript. GASP. I used said. I changed every dialogue scene I could find to not only eradicate the word said as a dialogue tag, but to include action verbs. So, so many action verbs.

I re-read my manuscript, expecting to be blown away by the new, shiny and improved version.

I laughed out loud.

By the way, in the history of ever…have you ever bemoaned something? Yeah, I didn’t think so. Crossing that off my list of 500 words to use instead of said.

cool_it

Guess what?

Sometimes….you just said. Yeah, you heard me. I said that. My eyes weren’t begging. I wasn’t reaching for anything and I didn’t mutter it or cry through bone wracking sobs. I said it.

I just simply said it.

Go on authors. Say it. You won’t die. The world won’t stop spinning on its axis. You won’t start the apocalypse.

You’re on the couch talking to your best friend. You’ve already reached for a cup of tea and blew on it to cool it off before the first sip. You’ve leaned back. Maybe you’ve set the cup down and hugged a soft pillow to your chest. You’ve smiled. They’ve smiled. You’ve laughed. You’ve connected, exchanged glances. They’ve asked. You’ve responded. And then…one of you just says something.

There’s no emotion in your eyes. No action to attach to the words. You just simply said.

Now I’m not saying all the time. Of course, we need to set the scene. The emotion. The tone. The visual in our reader’s heads.

But is it possible, that sometimes, something is just said?

THREE PEOPLE. ONE RELATIONSHIP.
For 31-year-old Amie Graham, life on the island was supposed to be simpler – simpler than the life and problems she left behind. Less complicated and less dramatic than life back home. That was the plan anyway.
But fate, it seems, has a sense of humor and it throws a complication or two right in her path.
Complication one, Michael.
If you could cross a model with a football player, you’d get Michael, at least how Amie sees him. Long dark blonde hair, packed with rounded muscles and well over six feet tall, he’s gorgeous, he’s funny, sweet and vulnerable. He’s her own Greek god among men, and she finds herself falling in love with him.
Complication two, Gabe.
Gabe is beautiful, serene and intelligent, and Amie finds herself drawn to him. With his curly brown hair, soulful green eyes and olive skin decorated with tattoos and piercings – she finds herself falling in love with him also.
The other problem? They’re best friends – and they’re in love with her too. Can three people really love each other, or is the air of the island just messing with their hearts and minds?
WARNING. This is a MFM romance. While this book focuses heavily on the emotions and relationship(s) there is plenty of steam! If this is your cup of tea, you should know there is no MM action. It’s all about Amie, and her love of these two hot, loveable, sexy men.
