The Island: New cover and newly formatted interior!

Island - new cover5.5x8.5_Cream_460

I wrote The Island in 2012, and released it in May of 2017. I studied as many tutorials as I could – and yet I still did A LOT (admittedly) wrong! There was some wonky formatting, no table of contents – etc.

Over the last week I have done a labor of love and reformatted the interior, as well as gave it a sparkly new cover!

THREE PEOPLE. ONE RELATIONSHIP.
For 31 year old Amie Graham, life on the island was supposed to be simpler – simpler than the life and problems she left behind. Less complicated and less dramatic than life back home. That was the plan anyway.
But fate, it seems, has a sense of humor and it throws a complication or two right in her path.
Complication one, Michael.
If you could cross a model with a football player, you’d get Michael, at least how Amie sees him. Long dark blonde hair, packed with rounded muscles and well over six feet tall, he’s gorgeous, he’s funny, sweet and vulnerable. He’s her own Greek god among men, and she finds herself falling in love with him.
Complication two, Gabe.
Gabe is beautiful, serene and intelligent, and Amie finds herself drawn to him. With his curly brown hair, soulful green eyes and olive skin decorated with tattoos and piercings – she finds herself falling in love with him also.
The other problem? They’re best friends – and they’re in love with her too. Can three people really love each other, or is the air of the island just messing with their hearts and minds?
WARNING. This is a MFM romance. While this book focuses heavily on the emotions and relationship(s) there is plenty of steam! If this is your cup of tea, you should know there is no MM action. It’s all about Amie, and her love of these two hot, loveable, sexy men. No cliffhanger, no cheating and a guaranteed happily ever after.

Emma fucking Winchester

She’s little sister of my ex-best friend, Forrest. She’s off limits like tempting forbidden fruit, and I’m the snake slithering through the grass.

She ignites a fire in me. One I can’t explain. One I sure as fuck can’t control. It’s raw and primal.

She’s sweet, and I am not.

She’s pure, and I’m broken.

When I came back to the town and past I’d left behind ten years ago to make it big in the world of underground fighting – it was for one reason, and one reason only. To take care of my Grandma Rose, and I’ll do it by any means necessary. Even if it means doing the one thing I never said I’d do.

I didn’t expect to see Emma again.

I didn’t expect to want her the way I do.

I didn’t expect to peel back all her perfectly controlled layers or for her to see through mine.

***

Love isn’t always simple. And it’s definitely not as predictable as aspiring dancer Emma Winchester’s life. Or the way her life used to be until Dean King forced his way into her world and heart – now there’s no turning back.

Emma returned to her hometown of Evansdale after leaving for college when tragedy struck. She and her brother Forrest are now the sole owners of Winchester Estate Orchards – but the apple business has never been Emma’s passion. Dancing is. Until she bumps into Dean King, her older brother’s ex-best friend and the object of her teenage crush. She knows she’ll hurt her brother if she keeps seeing Dean, but she can’t stay away.

Tall, handsome and tattooed boxer Dean King is nothing out of a fairy tale. He’s brooding and moody, and he doesn’t believe in love. But when he runs into Emma, something ignites inside of him. A fire. A desire that’s all but consuming in way he doesn’t understand.

Dean’s life has never been simple. And it’s never been predictable. Coming from a poor family and having an alcoholic and neglectful mother left him with scars he’d just as soon forget. He left Evansdale to get away from the memories and reputation that have haunted him – until his grandmother Rose, the only person who’s ever told him they loved him is dying. Dean will do whatever it takes to take care of his Mama Rose. Even if it means selling his soul.

Fate brings them together. Burning passion binds them. When the fires get too hot, can love save them?

The Space Between Us is a standalone novel in the Men of Evansdale County Series. No cheating. No cliffhanger and a guaranteed happy ever after!

Rocking Autum Excerpt | 99 Cent Sale |NEW Project!

Eight days in a row.

Eight days in a row, Jaxon has come in and bought a cupcake.

The first seven days I hid.

I could see him at the crosswalk on the corner of Main and Second from where I stood at the cash register. He didn’t look both ways. He didn’t even wait for the signal. He just crossed the street like he owned it, his stupid hair blowing back in the breeze.

Too afraid of what I might say, I hid behind tall rows of books so he couldn’t see me. Yesterday I hid in the kitchen and the day before I hid in the office. But I watched him the whole time. He would flash that bright white grin and order a coffee. Double espresso macchiato, like that made him so sophisticated or something.  He flirted, asking for cupcake recommendations.

God, the way he lay on the charm with Shannon, the barista. It made me sick. And her giggling at his jokes was even worse. I had to do something, this had to stop.

Following him out to the sidewalk, my knees shake so hard I’m afraid I’ll fall over. “Get back here,” I call to him.

Jax turns to the sound of my voice, with that maddening grin on his face. “I knew you’d come around.”

“No,” I shake my head in disgust. “I came out here to tell you to stop. Stop coming in. Stop with the flirting and the cupcakes and—just stop.”

“Why does it bother you so much?” Jax leans against the brick building, propping himself up with his elbow.

I wonder if maybe there is some kind of ‘cool’ class he went to and learned these things. The Perfect Smirk 101. Advanced Leaning Against Buildings Theory and Discussion. Philosophy of Always Looking Like Your Hair Is Blowing In The Breeze. Creative Eye Smoldering Basics.

“It-it doesn’t bother me,” I stutter and roll my eyes, vowing not to let myself get distracted in staring at him. “Fine, it does bother me. You’re bothering me. I’m trying to work, something you obviously know nothing about. I have responsibilities, okay? I can’t just run around with a stupid freaking guitar and get people to throw money at me. I have to work for it. And you’re…”

He smirks again. “I’m what? Distracting you?”

“Fuck off, Jaxon.” I shake my head.

“C’mon,” he urges. “Let’s get lunch and catch up.”

“I’m not hungry,” I say and cross my arms defiantly.

“You know you want to.” He moves closer and lowers his head so that our faces are mere inches away from each other. “You just said yourself that I’m a distraction.”

“Have you always been this full of yourself?” I snarl.

Jaxon chuckles and shrugs. Raking his fingers through his hair. He’s so close I can smell him. The crisp, clean scent of soap and the warm, masculine musk of his skin. I have the urge to reach out and slap him.

“You forget, I know you.” I grin right back. Two can play this game. “Or at least I used to. This Jaxon—” I use my hands to gesture towards him. “The one walking around like he owns this town, grinning at everyone and acting like he’s so cool and sexy? This isn’t the Jaxon I knew.”

“You think I’m sexy?” he asks with a grin.

“I feel sorry for you. I really do.” I take a step back to get away from his nearness. “The Jaxon I knew was sweet. Maybe a little cocky and rough around the edges, but not this—egomaniac asshole purposely trying to ruin my workday.”

His face softens slightly, but it isn’t good enough. “I’m not trying to ruin your work day Autumn. I’m trying to get you to talk to me.”

“Well, you’re doing a miserable job of it.” I turn and walk a few steps, resting my hand on the handle of the door. I turn back to face him for a  second. “My advice? Turn around and leave. Go back to Chicago and don’t come back.”

“What about my daily cupcakes? I’m starting to get used them.” He cocks his head to the side.

“I’m sure you’ll learn to live without them. The same way I learned to live without you.” With that, I open the door of the bookstore, walk in, and don’t look behind me to see his expression.

Rocking Autumn’s Kindle Countdown is going. Only 33 more hours to get it at 99 cents until the price jumps!

If you’ve made it this far then welcome to my WIP update and New Project announcement.

Broken is coming right along. I’ve finished the first 30K words and now I am waiting for NaNoWriMo to begin so I can write the remaining 50-60K. I’m SO excited about where this story is going.

For those who know me, I was involved in a storytelling forum of sorts for MANY years. And I had quite a few stories that were popular, but none were as popular as my ongoing story of Matt and Miley. It had glamour, lust, love, betrayal, heartbreak and so much more. I’ve decided to turn it into a series! I have not purchased these images yet, these are just for me to figure out visually where I am going. But here is a sneak peek at The Enigma Models INC series…

Self Publishing 101: Part One

Since I began self-publishing, I’ve had many friends and colleagues ask to pick my brain about “how to” go about self-publishing. The truth is that it is all at once WAY easier than I thought it would be, and daunting all at the same time. There is a lot to learn, and while this post is not going to be all-encompassing, it’s a start-so buckle up, you’re in for a journey.

72d10-tumblr_static_tumblr_maoaubjog61re1a3so1_500

*this was going to be a You-Tube video. But I’m sick. The kind of sick where you can’t sleep at night because you can’t breathe and you can’t say more than ten words without taking a sip of water.*

Step One: If it isn’t obvious enough. WRITE A BOOK! While you’re at it, write a damn good book.

Nothing is more cringe-worthy to me as a self-published author than reading book reviews of other self-published authors and the reviewers make remarks about the bad writing and poor editing – noting specifically that they are self-published.

Around this time you should also start looking into a cover for your book.  It’s a big decision and an important one, so it shouldn’t be put off until the last minute. We all say we don’t judge a book by its cover, but in the literal sense, we do. A good cover will make someone click on your book to read the blurb or move on to the next one. (More on covers and blurbs later)

Step Two: Edit your book. You have a choice here, after all, you are self-publishing so the world is your proverbial oyster. You can edit your manuscript yourself, or you can hire a professional editor.

Editors can get expensive. Really expensive and the prices go up based on what kind of editing you want done. But they also kind of know what the fuck they are doing. You can pay someone to just go in and fix your grammar, misspelled words and poor punctuation – all the way to basically rewriting, reorganizing and deleting sections of your work – all to make your book baby shine like a diamond.

Be prepared for the editing process to take some time. Possibly even longer than it took you to write your book. Start contacting editors and establishing a rapport with one BEFORE your book is done, and get on their calendar. (You aren’t their only client)

You can go the route of DIY, but it’s also hard to be objective about your own work. It’s also easy to glaze over words you’ve read hundreds of times. For budget reasons, sometimes this is the choice you have to make. If you go the route of self-editing I would suggest buying a subscription to Grammarly and using the Word plugin, sending your manuscript off to trusted (and smart) friends and relatives and asking your beta readers some tough questions – and using their advice!

Basically, if you aren’t so sick of your book that the idea of reading it one more time doesn’t make you want to vomit-it’s not ready. I STILL can’t read The Island.

Step Three: ISBN’s. International Standard Book Number. Again, you have a choice to make here. ISBN’s are yet another expense you need to plan for BEFORE your book is even released.

So now you need to figure out what forms your book is going to be published in, because you will need a different ISBN for each one. That’s right. If you have an e-book, a paperback, and a hardcover, you need a different ISBN for each one. Then to complicate matters further – you need different ISBN’s for each e-book version you offer. So if you plan to sell your ebook at more stores than just Amazon – yep, more ISBN’s. And lemme tell ya, ISBN’s aren’t cheap – but you do get a “deal” if you buy them in bulk. In the US Bowker is who you purchase them from.

Now. Amazon, Nook, Kobo and CreateSpace (probably more, but I’m not 100% familiar with those platforms, so I can’t speak to them) do offer free ISBN’s. Great on the budget, for sure.

The drawback to a free ISBN is that YOU are not the publisher. You’re self-published, but the publisher is the platform who gave you the ISBN. Now let’s say your book makes it BIG. Everyone is talking about it, and a brick and mortar store wants to carry your book. Do you really think they are going to purchase bulk books from Amazon? Hell no. What if, by some crazy chance someone wants to make a movie based on YOUR book. Well who owns a little piece of your book by giving you a free ISBN?

A likely scenario? No. But it is something to consider, especially if you want your books to be sold in an actual, physical store someday.

Step Four: Set up an account at your publishing platform(s). Do some research here and figure out what is going to work best for you. Amazon, SmashWords, Bookbaby, Ingram Spark, Create Space, iBooks – there are so many and each one is different.

Due to time restrictions, I did not use Create Space for my last release, Rocking Autumn and instead I directly uploaded it to Amazon, Kobo and Nook. For my upcoming Spring book release, I will be using Create Space and possibly doubling up and using Ingram Spark as well. (we can go into the why’s another time) But basically, do your research.

To set up an account is a fairly simple process, you will need to enter in your tax information and banking information.

Step Five: Format your book! You will need to format your book for e-book and paperback. Myself, I did not use a template to format my books, instead I googled tutorials on the internet. THIS is a good one that I have saved in my bookmarks. For formatting templates DIYbookformats.com is another one I have saved in my bookmarks.

Recently I’ve been playing around with the Beta Version of Kindle Create, a Word plugin that formats your book. While it has some cool features, and I might re-install it when I am done writing – it made Word a little buggy and it kept crashing. *sigh* So much for easy.

Now that your book is ready to be uploaded, we will leave it here. I will pick this back up next week and dive into loading your book, setting categories and pricing and everything else that happens behind the scenes.

Rocking Autumn has gotten a Book Make-Over

I’ve always loved graphic design. Before deciding to delve into writing, I did design for eight years where I ran my own business designing scrapbooking materials. In all that time I used just an old school version of Photoshop 7.

I’ve designed all my covers, graphics and teasers in it – but what I could do was limited. Well recently a good friend gifted me the entire Creative Suite and my mind is blown. I took some courses and dove in to try and create my own full cover. I’m pretty excited by the results!
